Flying camera drones such as the DJI Mini 3 or DJI Mavic series, which are normally commercially available, is a fun hobby that has grown in popularity in recent years. However, with the influx of new technology, FPV has begun to earn its place in the drone world with even more possibilities and even more fun. But... What is FPV and why should you get FPV goggles?
FPV stands for First Person View, which means that you are the pilot on board your drone or airplane. With FPV goggles, you can see exactly what your drone sees, giving you an unbeatably intense flying experience.
If you're new to the world of FPV goggles, it can be overwhelming at first and you probably don't know where to start. There are so many options on the market, and knowing which goggles are right for you is difficult to figure out. To help you get started, we've put together a list of the best FPV goggles for beginners. Both digital and analog systems are included. If you want to learn more about the differences between these technologies, you've come to the right place in this blog post!
The DJI FPV goggles are an excellent option for beginners. They offer a great image with a resolution of up to 1080p and a field of view of up to 54 degrees. They are robustly built with DJI's renowned quality. The goggles have their own built-in video receiver. However, there are a few things to consider in terms of compatibility with the video transmitters. The DJI Goggles Integra, DJI Goggles 2 and DJI FPV Goggles V2 are all compatible with the DJI O3 Air Unit and the DJI Avata. Updates are required for compatibility with Caddx Vista video transmitters, for example.
A disadvantage of these goggles is that they are more expensive than other HD systems (considering goggles + VTX + camera); DJI video goggles are therefore an investment for every drone pilot.
The DJI Goggles Integra and DJI Goggles 2 have a head-tracking function. This means that you can move your head to change the view of the camera on your drone. This function is practical for filming, but currently only works with the DJI Avata drone.
A side note: If you are more interested in drone racing, DJI is unfortunately not the best choice as some of the leagues cannot operate DJI together with other pilots. This makes it harder to become competitive!
For spectacle wearers: Corrective lenses can be used in some cases or there are corresponding adjustment options.
The Fatshark Recon HD is an affordable option that is perfect for beginners looking to get into the FPV world. These goggles offer 1080p resolution and a 44-degree field of view, providing a clear and immersive view from your drone's perspective. The Fatshark Recon HD may not be the most comfortable option on the market, but it's an excellent choice for those on a budget who still want a high-quality flying experience. The Fatshark Recon HD video goggles are compatible with Walksnail video transmitters.
For spectacle wearers: There is no adjustable lens. However, you can wear glasses under the video goggles.
The Walksnail Avatar Digital HD is an option for pilots who want to enter the digital world on a budget (it's cheaper than DJI systems), but at the same time don't want to make any major compromises. These goggles offer 1080p resolution and a 46-degree field of view and have a built-in receiver for Walksnail video transmitters. Like the DJI goggles, it is equipped with a DVR that allows you to record your flight directly in the goggles.
For spectacle wearers: the pupil distance and focus range can be adjusted.
The Fatshark Dominator HDO3 is a high-end option in the Walksnail world that offers a premium experience for drone pilots. These goggles offer 1080p resolution and a 46-degree field of view, providing a crystal clear and immersive view of your drone's perspective. One of the standout features of the Fatshark Dominator HDO3 is its OLED display, which offers excellent color accuracy and high contrast. The goggles are compatible with the Walksnail system.
For spectacle wearers: the pupil distance and focus range can be adjusted.
The Skyzone SKY04X is another mid-range option that offers a high quality picture with a resolution of 960p and a 46 degree field of view. The Skyzone SKY04X comes with an analog diversity receiver that can be upgraded. It is also equipped with a DVR recorder, which can be helpful if you have lost your drone. These goggles are compatible with analog video transmitters.
For spectacle wearers: the pupil distance and focus range can be adjusted.
The FatShark Scout video goggles have a resolution of 640p and a field of view of 50 degrees. They offer a reasonably inexpensive introduction to analog FPV. The receiver is permanently installed in these goggles and cannot be replaced. The FatShark Scout can be used with all common analog FPV video transmitters.
For spectacle wearers: There is no adjustable lens.
You don't necessarily have to buy video goggles and the parts for your drone separately. Some companies sell complete setups with a drone, radio remote control and goggles. This is a great solution for people who aren't sure if the FPV hobby is for them or just want to get started quickly. Here is a list of the most popular starter kits:
BetaFPV has been a leading name in the world of small FPV drones for many years, and their latest offering, the BetaFPV Cetus Kit, is no exception.
It is a micro drone with a compact size of just 65mm. It comes with a 1S battery, analog video goggles and a small remote control, making it lightweight and easy to carry around. These small drones are ideal for indoor flying.
The video goggles can also be used with other analog video transmitters.
For spectacle wearers: there is no adjustable lens.
The TinyGo Kit is an excellent option for anyone who wants to get started with FPV flying and racing. This kit includes everything you need to start flying, including the drone, radio controller and FPV goggles. It is similar to the BetaFPV Cetus Kit.
The TinyGo kit has a special feature: there is a version with a built-in 4K camera. However, it should be noted that the video image is not transmitted to the analog FPV video goggles in 4K. 4K refers to the ability to record 4K videos on a memory card in the drone.
For spectacle wearers: There is no adjustable lens.
The highest-quality complete package, the DJI Avata drone including video goggles and controller, is perfect for anyone who wants to enter the world of FPV flying and at the same time wants high quality in all aspects. However, this quality and equipment also comes at a price. As an entry-level set, the DJI Avata offers the best image and boasts a number of safety features. This is also very important for beginners, as the DJI Avata is larger and faster than the copters mentioned above.
For spectacle wearers: In some cases, corrective lenses can be used or there are corresponding adjustment options.
When choosing FPV goggles, you need to consider a number of factors that will affect your flying experience. Here are some things you should consider when choosing:
As we've seen above, FPV goggles can range from budget to high-end options. think about how much you're willing to spend and what features are important to you. Keep in mind that investing in a higher-end pair of goggles may be worth it in the long run, as they offer a better experience and are more future-proof. The resolution of your FPV video goggles affects the quality of the image you see. Goggles with a higher resolution provide sharper images, but are usually more expensive. think about what resolution is right for you and your needs.
The field of view (FOV) indicates how much of the image you can see through the glasses. A larger field of view offers a more intense experience, but can also be more challenging when flying.
FPV goggles can be equipped with either an LCD or OLED display. OLED displays usually have better contrast and color accuracy, but are also more expensive. consider which type of display is right for you and your needs.
Some FPV goggles, like the Fat Shark Attitude V5, have a modular design that allows you to upgrade the goggles with additional modules. If you are interested in upgrading your goggles in the future, you should consider doing so.
FPV video goggles are an essential tool for any FPV drone pilot, and the right goggles can make all the difference in your flying experience. Whether you're looking for a budget-friendly or high-end option, one of the many FPV goggles on the market will meet your needs. Keep the above factors in mind when choosing and you'll be well on your way to a mesmerizing and exciting flying experience.
