This time we have picked out and tried out the top 10 most adventurous tricks to make FPV flying in winter a little more enjoyable. And they include everything. From super weird to actually useful.
by the way: You can find most of the products from the video in our store. Why not take a look? With every purchase you support our work. Thank you!
With the LiPo bag from Mr. Steel's Ethix brand, things get hot straight away. This high-quality bag has a very important feature for the winter, because it can be heated. The only thing you have to do is connect one of your full batteries and your batteries will stay warm. Why is this important, you ask? Batteries lose a lot of power in cold temperatures. By keeping them warm, you can squeeze a little more power and flight time out of a battery charge.
But what good is that if your action camera, radio or video goggles don't hold out? If there is no more room in your Lipo bag, you can simply keep the other small batteries warm in a jacket pocket using your body heat.
The SMA Extender from Team Blacksheep is practically an extension for SMA antennas, such as those used by the TBS Crossfire system. And how does this help you in winter? You simply screw the antenna from your transmitter onto the extender and then put it on the roof of your car. Just remember not to put the window all the way up again, otherwise you'll pinch the cables.
Now you no longer need to worry about the radio signal being blocked by the car and you can sit in the warm at the same time. The same applies to the video signal, of course.
Make your drone waterproof and snowproof! It's easy to do with silicone conformal coating and a UV lamp. We've actually made a video about this before and really put our FPV drone under water.
Number 7 is very practical, even if you have a waterproof drone. With a take-off and landing pad from StartRC, you can prevent snow from getting on your cameras during take-off.
Plastic becomes brittle in the cold. So tip number 6: Always have a few more spare parts, propellers and camera mounts with you
What do skiing and FPV flying in the snow have in common? The problem with so-called "flat light". If the sunlight is blocked by snow, fog or clouds, it is almost impossible to make out details in the snow in front of you. The horizon can also become blurred, so you have no idea where you are. The same problem can also occur when flying FPV drones in the snow.
To counteract this problem, there are extra goggles for skiing that increase the contrast to make it easier to see details. Fortunately, we have a similar option in the FPV world, as brightness and contrast can be adjusted in the settings of most video goggles.
And another tip for your video goggles. Switch on the fan! When you move from outside to the car, it is quite likely that the lenses will mist up. This happens less with the fan.
You've read this far, but now you're thinking "all well and good, but I just don't feel like going out in the cold". Then you should definitely think about getting yourself a Tiny Whoop. Tiny Whoops are small FPV drones that are perfect for flying indoors.
Now let's make your drone really shine. With LEDs! They come in all sizes, shapes and colors and will help you find your copter again if you crash in the snow. We have a video planned for this. As soon as it is finished, we will of course link it here.
Here comes our absolute favorite: a hand warmer that ensures that your hands don't freeze to the spark. Such a hand warmer is important to avoid losing precision and speed on the sticks and possibly causing micro-vibrations. The hand warmers are available to buy(hand warmers from StartRC) or you can assemble the heated premium version yourself, as we did. We show you how to do this in the video.
Let us know what your top tip is for flying comfortably in winter, which we should include in our next video. Just write us your comment on Youtube or Instagram.
