RunCam Thumb Pro, a 16-gram 4K camera with gyro data
You probably already know the RunCam Thumb camera. The Thumb Pro model uses the two basic principles of its predecessor: it is battery-free to remain as light as possible and it records flight data from a gyro. This gyro data can be used by an image stabilization tool in post-production such as Gyroflow.
Here are the specifications of the camera:
What's new?
One of the main complaints about the original Thumb camera is the 1080p resolution. With the Thumb Pro, you now get a whopping 4K 30fps and 2.7K 60fps. It's amazing how Runcam has managed to build a 16-gram camera that can record 4K video with a built-in gyro! In addition, it is now also possible to shoot and film in vertical mode (and stabilize the images in this portrait format).
RunCam was inspired by the GoPro Lab for the settings: A QR code system generated by a smartphone app automates definition, saturation and exposure presets. Although the image quality is not yet as good as the latest GoPro, there is a huge improvement over the last thumb generation.
The camera should be operated with a maximum of 5V. RunCam supplies a cable with a solder connection for this purpose. It has a microUSB port for connecting to a computer and accessing data without removing the memory card. With just one click on "Auto Sync" in Gyroflow, you can set the cropping levels for the smoothness to your liking and the stabilized footage can be exported.
A lens protector is included in the scope of delivery, which can be replaced with ND filters (ND4, 16 and 32 available). ND filters are useful as they increase motion blur and reduce the jello effect, making your video look even better. Depending on the lighting, you will need to choose the right ND filter and adjust the shutter speed accordingly. It's best to try out which settings suit you and when. You can find out more about ND filters here.
Let's go
To use the Actioncam, simply press the single button on the camera to start recording. The red LED will start flashing when recording. To change camera settings such as resolution, video quality, shutter speed, etc., you need to use the Runcam app (available in the Apple and Android app stores).select the Thumb Pro as the camera in the app, then select the desired settings and press "Apply" to generate the QR code. Now follow the instructions to scan the QR code with the Thumb Pro to activate the new settings.
